God’s Voice

I love it when the Lord speaks to me clearly. I know I sometimes talk myself out of His quiet whisper, dismissing it as my own voice. There have been many times at church lately when I have felt a burning to go and grab the hand of someone and ask them to come with me to the alter to pray. I am usually afraid and if I internally debate long enough, the feeling passes. However, when God speaks loud and clear, there is no denying it. I love it when that happens. I can quote you several things God has said to me in this manner, because it always surprises me and can even cause adrenalin to rush into my veins like when a car swerves in front of me. Do you know what I mean?

Well, He spoke loud and clear when I was in Utah this past week. On the second night, I had been lying in bed talking on the phone to my husband. It was 10:30 PM there, so 9:30 at home. I was having trouble getting to sleep so early with the time change. Around 11:00 PM, we hung up, and I turned off the lights. After tossing and turning, I flipped the TV back on. About 30 minutes later, I finally started nodding off and turned off the TV. Just as I was about to fall asleep, an odd thought popped in my head. ‘Lock the windows.’ I dismissed it immediately thinking, “That’s just being paranoid because I’m alone in a hotel.” Besides, I had securely locked the door, used the deadbolt and the motel lock thing, and even wedged a chair under the door nob as I always do. So, there was no need to get up and turn on the lights, just as I was finally falling asleep.

That’s when it happened. Loud and clear God said, “Lock the windows!” My tummy nose dived and I pulled the covers back and said, “Okay.” Nothing deep or spiritual came out of my mouth, just ‘okay’.

My company had put me in a suite, so I went to the kitchen window first, it did not even open. I went to the living room—all locked and secure. As I walked to the spare bedroom, I started thinking, “See this is stupid. Now I won’t get to sleep for another hour.” I pulled the curtain back, and you guessed it, the window was unlocked and slid straight up without a sound. I was on the ground floor with an embankment behind me, putting the window just below waist high. Super easy to step right in. My heart began to race. I went to the window in my bedroom and it was unlocked too. In one smooth noiseless motion, it slid wide open.

After asking God for forgiveness for not listening the first time, and thanking Him for speaking a second time in a clear firm voice, and then praising Him for saving me from something horrible, I fell into a sweet asleep. I can honestly say I will never forget to check my hotel windows again.

As I told my husband about it the next day, God’s choice of words dawned on me. He didn’t tell me to “Check the windows.” He said, “Lock the windows.” I can still hear His words echo in my head.

“THANK YOU, THANK YOU, GOD, for protecting me on my trip!”

1 Kings 19: 11-13
“… Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.”

I must learn to listen to His gentle whisper. I think it’s a habit. We can develop habits to dismiss and ignore His voice, or the habit of heeding it instantly. I need to return to the latter habit.

But oh how I love hearing His loud voice too!
